The remaining population of painted turtles in our part of the province is officially listed as endangered. These are our only native freshwater turtles, and are easily distinguished from the ‘pet’ turtles that have been released into ponds and other waterways. At our May 9th meeting, SFU graduate student Deanna McTavish will describe the recovery plans for this species, and a number of local projects aimed at creating and improving their habitat. Aimee Mitchell of the Western Painted Turtle Recovery Team will be a co-presenter.
